Turn on to Tarner
Phoenix Community Centre, 12 July 2003
This is a record of the launch of a broadband Internet connection at the Phoenix Community Centre in Brighton & Hove.
The event featured all sorts of activities, including learning how to use a digital camera, video, graphics and surfing the net. There were also workshops in personal safety, wonderful food cooked by a local healthy eating group and lots of fun and games when a Lara Croft look-a-like opened the proceedings.

The Friends Centre received UK Online Centre funding to set up several outreach locations across the city. Phoenix Community Centre is based in the Tarnerland area and now has a fast Internet connection and the latest radio-based networking.
This means that Friends Centre tutors can arrive with their own set of laptops, set them up on the tables (see images above) and be instantly connected to the internet.
Lessons have already started running and have been attracting lots of first time users - people who haven't used a computer before.
The equipment was installed by SCIP, who will continue to support the project to help make the most of the broadband connection. This will include ongoing support for Becky Parnell and other community activists in the area in the form of services such as techncial support, planning new developments and the delivery of taster sessions.

SCIP has a digital video camera and an Apple mac laptop. When combined with a fast Internet connection it is possible to shoot, edit and upload a simple web movie in a matter of hours.
