WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

The following example shows how volunteers can help a local charity

young people's centre logoBrighton Young People's Centre

The YPC offers opportunities, activities, information and support to young people aged 13-25 in the Brighton and Hove area. This is delivered via drop-in services and a more long term counselling service, all housed in its own building in Ship Street in central Brighton.

We recently set up a dedicated computing and internet centre for young people that operates 5 days a week. This means that we're now seeking people from all walks of life to provide drop in support.

Volunteers mainly assist young people with any queries they may have regarding the ICT equipment and software titles that they may be using, in a very informal and friendly environment.

You could also help young people create their own project work i.e. a website or newsletter for a youth group or the YPC itself.

The YPC is looking for people with:

  • Ability to support young people access ICT equipment and games
  • A knowledge of general ICT hardware, software an the World Wide Web
  • Basic Website or Desk Top Publishing skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Sensitivity towards the issues facing young people and an awareness of their needs
  • Commitment to working within the Young People's Centre's policies and procedures, including confidentiality
  • Commitment to empowering young people
  • Willing to commit to a dedicated session(s) per week

You offer it and I'm sure we'll use your valuable expertise!
