Windows 7: Is it time to upgrade?

We catch up with Doly Garcia, Technical Support Officer at SCIP to get the low-down on the latest version of the Windows operating system and how SCIP can help you upgrade. Read on to find out more.

How is Windows 7 different from other operating systems?

Windows 7 is the latest Windows operating system. This means that it's compatible with some new hardware that older versions of Windows aren't. Most touchscreens will work straight away and it takes advantage of all the speed of the latest 64-bit processors. It also has some new features that older versions don't have, with a new style of taskbar that many people find more intuitive, and it allows more customisation than previous versions of Windows.

Some of the usual features have improved: searching for files is very fast, it resumes quickly after going to sleep, it detects USB devices almost immediately, and it needs less memory than Windows Vista. Finally, it's the best operating system to run if you want to use Office 2007.

Who should consider upgrading to Windows 7?

If you are buying a new computer, I recommend having Windows 7 on it, because it will work best with the new hardware. Also, it's always best to have all the computers in your office running the same operating system so they are fully compatible with each other. If you are buying a new batch of computers with Windows 7, and the rest of the computers are 3 years old or less, it's time to consider upgrading your whole office to Windows 7.
