A day in the life of Peter Mason, Web Designer at SCIP

Apart from sitting around playing on their iPad and drinking Italian coffee, what exactly does a Web Designer do all day? We dragged Peter Mason away from watching the World Cup for long enough to provide video evidence of what happens on an average day. Read on for a glimpse of the glamour.

Esther Springett, SCIP’s Marketing Campaign Assistant discovers to her surprise, that for Peter Mason this is just another normal day at the office.

As a newcomer to the SCIP team and keen to get stuck in, I decided what better way to find out how the team run than follow a SCIP worker for the day. Stay tuned and even you may learn a thing or two.

Peter Mason designs websites for a range of organisations and community groups. His ultimate goal is to make sure that they are sustainable and can be maintained by their content producers and users. One of his many projects includes the Good Practice Guide to Volunteering website which he organised content for, built and designed. More recently he has been working on the Brighton and Hove Learning Partnership website which provides information on learning opportunities and networks across the city.

The day that I follow Peter he has a busy agenda consisting of a Volunteer Centre Advisory Group Strategic Workshop (yes it’s a mouthful but don’t let that put you off). Observing the dialogue unfold throughout the meeting it is clear that not only is Peter a skilled web designer and an expert in his field, he is also at the centre of current debate surrounding the future of volunteerism in Brighton and Hove. In order to meet the changing needs of his clients, Peter is making sure he is part of the debate.

The meeting covered questions regarding the sustainability of the Volunteer Centre in a changing economic climate and the prospect of working towards a model for social enterprise. Check the video to find out more.

This ‘day in the life’ just goes to show that not all is as it appears. Any previous preconceptions of a SCIP web designer quietly tapping away at a computer behind closed doors went out the window.

Join me next month when I follow another unsuspecting Scipper.
