Welcome to the Hello! style round up of the launch of HUBS 23 September 1999 ______________________________________________
Rt
Hon Andrew Smith MP, promoted to the Treasury in
Tony Blair's recent reshuffle, and Cllr Jenny
Langston, Mayor of Brighton, enjoy a bit of laugh
with Big Issue vendors, staff and
volunteers. Mark
Walker, HUBS Project Manager, chats with Andrew
Smith MP and Jon Tutcher, SUN UK's Head of
Corporate Affairs. SUN is now offering to provide
server facilities to support the
project. Dr
Gerard Macdonald (left) is workng with HUBS to
develop its activities with local schools. He is
talking to John Pratty, who came on SCIP's very
first training programme, over four years ago and
now writes for the Daily Telegraph (we accept no
responsibility for that coincidence John).
In
the background is SCIP Director David
Goodwin.
A
key feature of the Cybercafe is that it uses
laptops connected to a server via a radio network.
This keeps the setting up time to minimum and means
the Cybercafe can be used in many flexible
ways. There
are also a variety of special devices to help
people with disabilities, including rollerball
mice, graphics tablets and text to speech
software. SCIP's
founder and Community Networking expert David
Wilcox chats with SCIP's Chair, Lynne
Richards. David
is currently working with the BBC on its WebWise
campaign, as well as advising the DTI and Home
Office on policy issues relating to IT and social
exclusion. back to the news page |
