We believe that the development of new technologies can potentially widen the divide between the haves and the have nots in society. Many people who can afford to access computers choose not to, but many more people face barriers of cost, as well as lack of skills and physical difficulties in accessing technology. We intend that the drop in centre will be run in conjunction with another local charity, and will provide a variety of computing resources available at low or no cost to the user. By working with other local agencies we can encourage the use of technology within an multi purpose setting, helping to avoid common problems such as isolation which computers can often appear to exacerbate. Following discussion with various agencies we are now starting to develop drop in services in conjunction with the Brighton office of The Big Issue. Despite some problems with moving into new offices we have now started the process of developing a service which provides access to computers and training for vendors, which we hope to have fully working before September 1999.
