For many people the most powerful symbol of social exclusion is the sight of people sleeping rough on our streets. For many years The Big Issue has provided a unique and highly respected means of addressing the issues of homelessness by offering an avenue for people to help themselves.

The HUBS concept similarly looks to develop the skills and aptitude of an individual, looking for ways of tapping their interests and abilities in a positive way to overcome the barriers they face in living the lives of their choice. This part of the HUBS project therefore draws upon the work and experience of The Big Issue and the offers the innovative approach of HUBS.

The plan is to open a drop in IT resource as part of the Big Issue's provision for people in Brighton and Hove. It is intended that this will be in Community Base, which The Big Issue has been waiting to move into for over a year. If current problems can be overcome the new drop in service will operate within the Big Issue offices, providing access to computers and informal training sessions.

  • Until the new drop in centre is open SCIP will be working with Big Issue staff and vendors on three key aspects of developing the service:
  • a pilot programme of six open access sessions for vendors, based at the the current Big Issue premises in Preston Street;
  • starting to develop the management team for the new drop in centre, which will include representatives of SCIP and Big Issue vendors as well as staff
